Want the best summer ever? Embrace hygge and all of its glory.
Hygge, pronounced like hoo-ga, is a Danish philosophy that prioritized comfort, tranquility, health, and relationships. I recently read The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking and it changed my life. This tiny book is crammed with tips and tricks to hygge up your life and be happier! Most of hygge revolves around food, which is pretty obvious because food makes us happy! Here’s the top three hygge-related food tips to improve your summer and live your best life.
Comfort foods: Although hygge focuses on well-being, it basically screams TREAT YO SELF. So, this summer, forget about your diet every once in a while and indulge in the foods that bring you happiness. Whether its ice cream on a hot day or a beer and hot dog at a baseball game, take note of how you feel when eating these comfort foods. What memories do they bring back? What memories are they making for you? ~Relish~ in your enjoyment.
Rainy days: Depending on where you live, summer can be one of the rainiest times of the year. On a rainy day, remember to hygge! Warm up your favorite tea or hot coco, wrap yourself in a blanket, and read a book. The warmth from your mug brings you peace and comfort on an icky day. I recommend finding some fun marshmallows or unique tea to make a classic drink a little more fun.
Cookouts: One of the most important aspects of hygge is your relationships. Without strong, healthy relationships, can you ever be at peace? Wiking recommends spending quality time with your loved ones by cooking together and enjoying the warmth of summer. Grill up some summer favorites like hot dogs and veggies or sit in the sun with a big bowl of watermelon. As long as you are munching away with friends and family, you are hygge-ing!
P.S. I highly recommend this book! It is a quick read (with pictures!!!) and really allows you the time to reflect on how you can improve your life.
